Have had quite a similar trajectory, and I don't think it's entirely odd whatsoever. I think there's a case to be made for a plurality of supernatural entities—that's something that I've always sensed—but in my view these are not the same as God proper. As Giordano Bruno says—as heterodox a Catholic as you'll find, I'd reckon—"God generates the gods..."
My sense is that the soul must descend fully into "the World" before it can ever begin the path of return, and that takes many different forms. For some, it's a dalliance with unfriendly spirits. Not for nothing does Dante have to first become lost in the dark woods and then escorted, by a friendly pagan, no less, through the inferno before he can begin his return.
