It may be worth reading Giordano Bruno's brief tracts on magic. They are telling. Bruno anticipates much of what we might regard today as modern advertising and marketing, namely the manipulation of people's desires by the will of the magician, in particular employing Eros and "binding." Modern advertising, therefore, might be regarded as a form of debased magic; these folks know they are manipulating others, but they are not equating it with magic, and just as with magic, there are good and bad advertisers as well as effective and less effective advertisers.
